My mother always told me that I would never understand how much you can love someone, how much she loves me until I have children of my own. I would just brush it off and think, ‘Meh, love is love, I know what love is.’ I grew up and experienced many different kinds of love and heartbreak. Then I met my future husband and found an amazing unconditional love. Our love, as unique and special as it is, cannot be compared to the love I have for my babies.
My mother is right, it’s so different. A love like no other. A love that makes you want to be the best person you can be. A love that makes you feel like you can do anything because you want them to know that they can do anything, be anything. Something about being someone’s everything, their world, changes you. All the choices you make suddenly revolve around your children and not much else.
Not only would I not understand how much my mother loved me until I had kids, but I would not understand how much I loved my mother until I had kids. It’s like I finally ‘get’ her. I understand why she was so overprotective, why she always wanted us to be careful and think, ‘what if’ in every situation. She couldn’t bear the idea of anything horrible happening to us, I understand that feeling now. You are given these precious, amazing gifts and you want to do anything and everything in your power to protect them. Thank you, mom, for loving us like that. I think we(your children) all ‘get it’ now. Now that we have found this love too. I’m so thankful we have this time in our lives together. I’m so thankful to have a mom like you. A wise and beautiful friend for life that will love me like no other person will ever love me. The truest love, the love of a mother.
