My Approach to Newborn Photography

As a Ventura County newborn photographer, I know that every baby is different and that every family has its own vision. I take the time to understand what matters most to you; whether that’s classic posed portraits, natural lifestyle moments, or a combination of both. My goal is always to create images that feel authentic to your family while showcasing the beauty and innocence of your newborn.

I work at your baby’s pace. Sessions are never rushed, and we build in plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. Your comfort and your baby’s well-being are my top priorities. The result is a relaxed, enjoyable experience that produces stunning photographs you’ll love.

Newborn Photography Session Types

Studio Newborn Sessions

Camarillo Photographer

Studio sessions offer the most control over lighting and styling, allowing for those classic, timeless newborn portraits you see in galleries. I have a variety of props, wraps, blankets, and backdrops in soft, neutral tones that complement every baby beautifully. From simple, elegant poses on creamy fabrics to setups featuring delicate headbands, baskets, and wooden bowls, studio sessions provide endless creative possibilities.

The controlled environment of a studio session lets us maintain the warm temperature newborns need to stay comfortable and sleepy, which leads to those peaceful, curled-up poses families love. These sessions typically last 2-3 hours and yield a diverse gallery of images.

In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

Camarillo Family Photographer

There’s something incredibly special about photographing a newborn in their own home. In-home sessions capture your family in your natural environment, documenting the authentic moments of early parenthood. We’ll photograph your baby in their nursery, in your arms on the couch, with siblings on the bed—wherever the natural light is beautiful and the moments feel genuine.

These sessions are perfect for families who want their photographs to tell the story of this chapter of their lives. The images feel documentary and real, with emotion taking center stage. Parents often treasure these photographs because they remember not just how their baby looked, but how this time in their lives felt.

If you love the idea of classic newborn portraits but prefer the comfort and convenience of your own home, I can bring the studio to you. I’ll arrive with my portable setup, including props, wraps, and all the equipment needed to create beautiful posed newborn images in your space.

This option combines the best of both worlds: the professional quality and variety of studio portraits with the convenience and comfort of staying home. It’s especially popular with families who have other young children or prefer not to venture out with a brand-new baby.

When to Schedule Your Newborn Session

Camarillo Newborn Photographer

The ideal window for newborn photography is 5-14 days after birth. During this time, babies are still very sleepy and flexible, making it easier to achieve those curled-up, peaceful poses. They’re also less prone to baby acne and haven’t yet developed the startle reflex that can make them harder to settle.

That said, I know birth doesn’t always go according to plan. If your baby spends time in the NICU, you have a difficult recovery, or life simply gets in the way, we can still create beautiful newborn photographs beyond the two-week mark. While older newborns may be more alert and less likely to sleep through posing, we can adapt the session to focus on lifestyle images and those precious awake moments.

I recommend booking your newborn session during your second or third trimester. I’ll pencil you in around your due date, and once your baby arrives, we’ll schedule the exact date. This ensures you have a spot reserved and one less thing to worry about in those busy postpartum days.

Newborn Safety: My Top Priority

Safety is never compromised in my newborn sessions. Every pose is carefully executed, and I never place your baby in a position that could be unsafe. Some of the elaborate poses you may see online are actually composites (multiple images combined in Photoshop).

I maintain a warm studio environment (typically around 78-82°F) to keep your newborn comfortable. All props and fabrics are cleaned thoroughly between sessions. I have extensive experience caring for newborns and can read their cues to keep them comfortable throughout the session.

If your baby needs to eat, change a diaper, or simply needs a break, we pause. There’s no rushing in newborn photography. Your baby’s well-being and comfort always come first. Patience is what leads to beautiful images.

What to Expect During Your Session

Newborn sessions typically last 2-4 hours, depending on your baby’s temperament and the number of poses or setups we’re doing. This may sound long, but it’s important to allow plenty of time for feeding and settling. The session flows at your baby’s pace.

I recommend feeding your baby right before we start and having them awake for this feeding if possible. A full belly makes for a sleepy, content baby, and starting with an awake baby means they’ll naturally fall into a deeper sleep as we work.

Parents are encouraged to relax during the session. Many parents use this time to rest while I work with baby, though I’ll also include family portraits and sibling photos if desired. The atmosphere is calm and soothing, with soft music and gentle handling of your newborn.

Preparing for Your Newborn Session

Preparation is minimal for newborn photography, but here are a few tips to ensure the best experience:

5 Tips for a Successful Newborn Session

Lake Bluff, IL Newborn Photographer

1. Keep your home warm. If we’re shooting at your house, turn up the heat to about 78°F a few hours before the session. A warm baby is a sleepy baby, and temperature control is one of the most important factors for those peaceful poses.

2. Dress simply. For any parent portraits, wear solid colors in neutral or complementary tones. Avoid busy patterns or logos. Think timeless rather than trendy—these photos will be on your walls for years to come.

3. Feed on demand. Don’t try to keep your baby awake before the session. A well-rested baby will be easier to settle and pose. Feed your baby right before we start, keeping them awake during this feeding if possible so they fall into a deeper sleep as we work.

4. Communicate preferences. Let me know if you have specific colors, props, or styles you love or want to avoid. Your input helps me create images you’ll treasure. Share Pinterest boards, sample photos, or simply describe your vision.

5. Relax and trust the process. Newborn sessions require patience. If your baby needs a break, we pause. There’s no rushing. Many of my best images come after we’ve taken time to settle and soothe. Trust that we’ll capture beautiful photos even if things don’t go exactly as planned.

Sibling and Family Portraits

Including siblings and parents in newborn sessions creates some of the most treasured photographs. These images document your family at a specific moment in time and often become favorites as the years pass.

I recommend doing family photos early in the session when everyone is fresh. Big brothers and sisters can be unpredictable, so we’ll work quickly to capture natural interactions and genuine moments between siblings and your new baby. Even if older siblings are having an off day, I can usually capture a few sweet moments that you’ll cherish.

Investment & Session Information

Your newborn photography session includes the session time, my expertise and artistic vision, professional editing of all delivered images, and access to a private online gallery where you can view, share, and order prints. Specific pricing and package information are available upon inquiry.

Most families invest between $400 and $800 in their newborn photography, including session fees and print products, though investment levels vary based on individual preferences and print selections. I offer both digital collections and heirloom print products, including albums, wall art, and announcement cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after birth should I schedule the session?

The ideal window is 5-14 days old, but beautiful newborn photos can be created beyond this timeframe. Contact me as soon as possible after birth, and we’ll find the best timing for your family.

What if my baby won’t sleep during the session?

Not all babies sleep through their session, and that’s okay! Awake newborn photos have their own special appeal. I’m experienced at working with alert babies and can capture beautiful images regardless of your baby’s sleep state.

Should I bring anything to the session?

Just bring yourself, your baby, and extra diapers. I provide everything else—props, wraps, blankets, and backdrops. If there’s a special item you’d like incorporated (a family heirloom blanket, for example), feel free to bring it.

How soon will I receive my photos?

You can expect your fully edited gallery within 2-3 weeks of your session. I take care with editing each image to ensure consistent, beautiful results.

Do you offer maternity photography too?

Yes! Many families book both maternity and newborn sessions together. Maternity sessions are best scheduled at 28-32 weeks of pregnancy, and I offer package discounts when booking multiple session types.

How long does a newborn photography session take?

Plan for 2-3 hours. This may seem long, but newborns need time for feeding, soothing, and settling between poses. Working at your baby’s pace ensures we capture those peaceful, beautiful images you’re looking for without rushing or stressing anyone.

Can you photograph twins or multiples?

Absolutely! I have experience photographing twins and multiples. These sessions typically run a bit longer to accommodate feeding and settling two babies, but the results are incredibly special. Twin sessions include individual portraits of each baby, as well as images of them together.

What should parents and siblings wear?

Wear solid colors in neutral or complementary tones—think whites, creams, grays, or soft pastels. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or anything overly trendy. Coordinate as a family rather than matching exactly. Comfort is important too, since you’ll be holding and cuddling your newborn.

Do you travel to homes throughout Ventura County?

Yes! I travel to clients’ homes throughout Ventura County and the surrounding areas for in-home newborn sessions. Whether you’re in Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Oxnard, Ventura, or any surrounding community within 2 hours, I’ll bring everything needed to create beautiful newborn portraits in the comfort of your home.
